Mission

THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT OPEN FORUM (the Forum)

The Built Environment Open Forum is a registered non-profit corporation, with the aim of offering educational opportunities and developing communication skills among environmental design professionals and other interested individuals. Programs include publishing, presentations, exhibitions, tutorials, discussion groups and workshops. The overall goal of the Forum is the improvement of the built environment.

1.       To this end, the Forum seeks to establish

                           i.          a greater understanding and appreciation of the role that architects play in achieving this goal, and;

                          ii.          the ways that the interested public can participate.

2.       The Forum furthers these goals through a variety of initiatives, that promote open dialogue among architects, environmental designers and the general public.

3.       The Forum’s major vehicle is The Right Angle Journal.

THE RIGHT ANGLE JOURNAL (the Journal)

The Right Angle Journal is a print and online architectural magazine that launched in 2017, with the aim of discussing architecture from the viewpoint of those who practice it and those whose lives are affected by it. Our discussions are intended to be informative and entertaining for architects, other allied professionals, students, interns and the general public. The Journal serves as both a meeting place for architectural ideas and as a means of making these ideas more widely appreciated.

The Journal seeks to expand the popular discussion of architecture to include practice, theory, and topics that are rarely discussed in other periodicals. Beyond structure, functionality and aesthetics, what do architectural concerns actually consist of? What sort of questions are architects best at asking and answering?

At the outset, the Journal promised to “take a refreshing new look at architecture and the built environment.” In his Introduction to our inaugural issue, Raymond Moriyama wrote:

Congratulations to a new quarterly to transcend Canada and the world. There is no turning back. Go forth with imagination, vision and gutsy pragmatic actions. The best to you, RIGHT ANGLE.

As we enter our fifth year of publication, there is still plenty for us to write about. If you are reading this, we hope you will consider joining our community by subscribing or becoming a contributor. You may contact the editor at: rightangleeditor@gmail.com
